skype && parents
Finally, I coaxed my dad into installing Skype, and we just talked with him and my mom for the first time via this VoIP program. They really enjoyed it, I think. Mom was giggling like a little child who just learned to play a new cool computer game. I’m pleasantly surprised too, because I was rather skeptical as to whether dial-up connection (on their side) would be sufficient for VoIP. Surprisingly, it worked. We talked for about twenty minutes, and the voice came out scrambled only 3 or 4 times during the whole conversation (so that I had to ask him to repeat what he said).
P.S. Google Talk also came out very recently, but I didn’t hear that many “wow”s. Still, I guess it’s worth checking out whether it provides better quality for a voice chat in this particular case (a slow dial-up connection on one end).
