META: “Translating prohibited”

translating_prohibited
(A sign on the castle wall. Karlstejn. July, 2004)

Just wanted to say that the two versions are going to be different. The siamese twins are going to get separated and are going to walk their own separate ways. I just don’t think that those daily translation exercises are a good investment of my time.

So, basically, if I watch a movie in English, I’ll probably write about it in English. If I read a book by a Belarusan author, I’ll probably write something about it in Belarusan. If I find an interesting link in English, it’ll get posted here. If it’s in Belarusan, you’ll probably find the link in the other version… We’ll see how it works.

    Fine by me. ;-)

But it has its drawbacks too. ;)

Now whenever I sit down to write something, I just say to myself, hey, this thing will only be interesting to Belarusian-speaking readers and so I don’t take the pains to translate the entry, while in fact, it’s just my own personal judgement. It might be something interesting for the English-speakers too. Or if it’s something that could be very interesting, but it requires some additional background information, so I’m just being too lazy about that…

But I feel more free though. Previousaly I felt like I caged myself with that bilingual mode of operation.

Hi Rydel! I’ve benefited from your translated entries from the livejournal days, so I wanted to thank you very much. It is quite inconvenient that babelfish doesn’t have a Belarusan to English feature, at least I don’t think? I only just tried to do it and couldn’t find it. Anyhow, that being said, I wonder if a good way to let you off the hook and still please us readers is to post a very brief English language summary of your Belarusan entry. This way, if some of us English only speakers (I know some Chinese!) find an interest in a primarily Belarusan subject, we can try to hit you up for some more information.

And probably won’t have it for a very long time. :(

All right. I’ll think about it.
