Maybe it would be interesting to know that NOT all people speak the same german, for example there is even a wikipedia in alemannisch (which is widely spoken in siwtzerland and south germany http://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/ and plattdüütsch http://nds.wikipedia.org/wiki/ as spoken in northern germany. Plattdeutsch really is pretty close to "standard"-german. btw dutch is also spoken in belgium (a bilinugal country), maybe you do a little research before publishing something about "white-holland".

Also note that we even have schools were sorbian http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9B%D1%83%D0%B6%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B5_%D1%8F%D0%B7%D1%8B%D0%BA%D0%B8 is officially taught. i guess the only way to do something in favor for the belarussian language would be to really actively distribute literature and other material online.

An official answer from Deutsche Welle foreign language director, to this publication:

* http://www.taz.de/pt/2005/10/22/a0196.nf/text.ges,1

*bangs head repeatedly on desk*

I guess some people just don't get it. What would happen if they started broadcasting a "Free Tibet" program, but only in Mandarin Chinese? Or a Pro-Basque broadcast, but only in Spanish? It would be completely ridiculous, and so is broadcasting an opposition broadcast to Belarus in Russian. Totally inept and stupid. But sometimes people don't understand the power of language, even though it is one of the most powerful instruments in this world.

I must admit, over the last several months, I have been reevaluating how "unbiased" I view Deutsche Welle. Well, either they're biased, or just culturally ignorant.

Ah I see... thanks for clarification. Well I decided to register as I really wanted to comment on that entry. Perhaps more people will do so from now on? I'll try to comment more often if you wish.

Its interesting I think to note that this site was suggested to me by rydel23 (the author of the White Holland link you posted earlier), whom closed his LJ blog due to various threats from people. His blog got a little _too_ well known I think, do hope yours wont suffer from the same fate.

Occasionally I also cross-post topics from a few blogs, including yours. (With the original author name of course) Hope you dont mind :)

}T{Reme [Q_G], I think I got comments to two other entries:

* http://www.br23.net/en/2005/09/03/new-orleans/#comments
* http://www.br23.net/en/2005/09/01/meta-translating-prohibited/#comments

The reasons for such low activity are pretty clear though. There are just about 30-40 readers of this blog as of now (as opposed to that other one which had 400-500 readers), and, besides, I created an additional “entry bareer” by requiring users to register. So thanks for jumping over that barrier and joining in. ;)

Thanks for your comment. :)

That guy's name is Dorokhov (Dorohov?). He's Russian-speaking, a part of Russian culture, it's just he happens to be a journalist, and against Lukashenka.

Here's what he wrote about Deutsche Welle in BDG, a Russian-language opposition newspaper:

http://bdg.press.net.by/2005/08/2005_08_12.1550/1550_4_2.shtml

"When I told one Western journalist about this protest with Deutsche Welle language choice, he just said: "it is so provincial!" And now the tone of those protesters is getting more and more hysterical. It's obvious the fewer arguments they have, the more hysterical they become."

I translated only the first paragraph (partially), but I guess that's enough, you are getting the picture?
