Belarus in Double Jeopardy

According to Google Video, this is basically the only time Belarus was mentioned on any of the American TV channels (excluding C-Span) in the last several months:

- Where do we start? Oh, let’s try a “B” country for $400.
- What is Bhutan?
- Let’s try it for $800.
- What is Belarus?
- Let’s have “B” country for $1,200, please.
- What is Brunei?
- “B” country for $1,600, please.
- What is Brittany?
- No. Paul.
- What is Breton?
- No. Larry’s not gonna ring in?
- Correct response. What is Belgium?
- April, back to you. “B” country for $2,000, please. Didn’t cost you anything, and it might earn you a lot of money. You have more than 50% of Larry’s total, which, of course, means that you could catch him and pass him for first place…
- Let’s bet $3,000. All right, here comes the clue in a “B” country…
- What is Bolivia?
- Bolivia. Well done, young lady. Way to go — the lead, with $6,800.

Vaclav Havel was absolutely right when he said that: “Belarus today is in the same situation which was accurately described in a famous essay by Milan Kundera about Central European countries after World War Two: it appears as if Belarus does not exist, it is not present in Western political and cultural thinking.”

I quote from Vaclav Havel’s preface to a new book “Unknown Belarus” (Neznámé Bělorusko) that was published several days ago in Czech.

True tho… its more rule than exception that any person I talk to has not even heard of the name before. Including the post office :( Every single time they ask me where it is and if its part of the EU. Pretty sure I’m the first ever person in that building to even mention the name. Or… thanks to mis-translation they punch in “Russia”… had that happen 3 times >_

Double Jeopardy! is the second round of the television gameshow Jeopardy!, when all point values are doubled

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeopardy%21

Jeopardy! is a game of trivia, usually covering topics such as history, literature, and pop culture. During the game, the three competing contestants are given a clue in the form of an answer, to which they must give a response phrased as a question.

  5. Mir'ritil Says:

    thanks.

quite unusual form… I’m used to simple noun-form answers, like in Russian TV “Своя Игра”.
