Valdas Adamkus on Belarus

“Die Welt” quotes Lithuanian president as saying that Lukashenka’s army could attack Lithuania:

Sein Volk fühle, “daß es nicht allein ist, was psychologisch wichtig” sei. Insbesondere Rußland, von 1940 bis 1990 Besatzungsmacht, sei nur noch wirtschaftlich als Bedrohung denkbar. Anders verhält es sich mit Weißrußland, mit dem Litauen eine 600 Kilometer lange Grenze teilt. “Wenn du morgens aufwachst, weiß du nie, was in Minsk passiert ist”, so Adamkus. Die “letzte Diktatur” Europas sei gerade bei der Grenzsicherung auch in Brüssel als Problem erkannt worden. Adamkus hält es nicht für ausgeschlossen, daß Lukaschenkos Truppen den kleinen Baltenstaat überfallen könnten. Europa könnte deutlicher zeigen, daß es sowohl die weißrussische Opposition als auch das Volk nicht allein lasse.

This statement of the Lithuanian president already provoked a scandal in Belarus. I also don’t quite understand why Adamkus (who seems to be a wise politician) would say that Belarus could wage war against Lithuania. How could he say that, knowing that Lithuanians and Belarusans lived peacefully together as one nation for 500 years. I guess he just wants more money for military uses from NATO, or what?

On the other hand, it was very cool that Adamkus critisized Germany and, specifically, Gerhard Schröder for his policies vis-a-vis Belarus. Gerhard Schröder looked pretty upset afterwards.
