VoIP Blocking
Just read this in “New Scientist”:
Many of the phone companies that own the wires connecting people to the internet are gearing up to block free phone calls that use voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology.
The online edition of IEEE Spectrum, the house journal of the US Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, says phone companies in France, Germany, Egypt and Saudi Arabia have announced they will block VoIP calls on their networks.
New software from Narus of Mountain View, California, will help them do it. Called IP Platform, it can detect VoIP’s characteristic data packets, allowing the phone company to block or de-prioritise them. This either stops the call entirely or makes it sound awful, and the companies hope this will drive people back to paid-for phones.
P.S. Since I’ve started using Skype and Google Talk more actively in the last three months (especially after my parents in Belarus learned how to use Skype), my monthly phone bill at home decreased drastically, from about $150 to $80-90.

Geez. Isn’t that considered abuse of your market position? Stupid also. VoIP calls from a computer to a phone or vice versa still require a contract signed by local operators. So they’re pretty much cutting their own fingers. Its always nice to see large companies slow down technological progress. Like for example its been possible for years to drive electrical cars but all research towards it was being sabotaged by big oil companies. They will never be able to block this entirely, way too many possibilities to bypass this blockage. Software can be programmed to spoof its data packages to go right through IP Platform. You can always use IM-based chat which is pretty much like VoIP except its between 2 computers. However mobile phones are advancing fast and many already are java-enabled. Its no that hard to write a java client which is able to encode and decode sound data :) Too many options, too much Micro$oft behavior.
