German && Belarusian

Did you know that we have a lot of loan German words in Belarusian language? For the most part they came to Old Belarusian via Polish, when we were living in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, being a real European nation. Just to give you an example, here are a few German words that end with “-ung” which found its way into Belarusan:

-ung (ger) -> -unek (pol) -> -unak (bel)

Examples:
die Gattung -> Gatunek -> Hatunak (sort, kind, type)
die Rechnung -> Rachunek -> Rachunak (bill, receipt)
die Rettung -> Ratunek -> Ratunak (rescue, salvation)
die Quittung -> Kwit -> Kvitok (receipt, ticket)
die Packung -> Pakunek -> Pakunak (package, parcel)

Probably also: pastarunak (police post), rabunak (robbery, cf. “der Raub”), malunak (painting, cf. “die Malerei”), ganak (threshold, entrance, cf. “der Gang”), kirunak (direction, cf. “kehren”), rysztunak (equipment, cf. “die Rüstung”), trunak (cocktail drink, cf. “das Getraenk”).

    Ah… didnt know Belarusian borrowed bits from German… Many languages in Europe borrow bits and pieces from each other. Italian and Spanish is a very good example. To the disgrunt of many Italians ;) Dont ever mention their language is related to Spanish :)
