All the darkness in the world cannot put out the smallest candle. The darker it is, more brightly shines the candle. instead of complaining about the dark search for your candle. Believe me; It exists

Ah.. I understand what you mean now.. sorry I didnt understand before.. yes its a bit sloppy that it took a whole year for them to write an article. Should say none of this is any surprise whatsoever, the only thing that surprises me is that they actually DID wrote an article.

> I agree with }T{Reme - i don’t think that this particular law is such a disaster. A total ban on foreign models may be a bit too much, but there are two things that i actually support...

I also agree with that. The main idea was to point out what kind of reporting/journalism you get in the US. And NYT is supposed to be one of the best...

> That NYT article also mentions that 75% of the songs on the radio must be Belarussian (sic). Does it mean that the artist must live in Belarus or that the language of the song must be Belarusian?

The former. In fact, most FM stations abuse this rule to a large extent. They claim that if a singer was born in Belarus that's a sufficient condition. And so they put songs by Russian singers such as Makarevich (Mashina Vremeni), Antonov, Zemliane, Lyapis, Kraski, Leprikons, etc. etc., although they left for Moscow long time ago and have almost no connection with Belarus and sing only in Russian.

And also, it seems no one is really checking on them, so I doubt that 75% is enforced.

I agree with }T{Reme - i don't think that this particular law is such a disaster. A total ban on foreign models may be a bit too much, but there are two things that i actually support:

1. A bit of healthy protectionism is not a crime against democracy and humanity. Democratic countries do it all the time.

2. If there's one thing that governments should control more if it wants to benefit the citizens, then it's advertising. Advertising lies, tricks and manipulations are the worst things in liberal capitalism. There can be, of course, bad control, e.g. banning companies that don't bribe the government, but also good control, e.g. support for increased use of the national language and that's the kind of censorship that i wouldn't mind.

That NYT article also mentions that 75% of the songs on the radio must be Belarussian (sic). Does it mean that the artist must live in Belarus or that the language of the song must be Belarusian? In Israel we have many radio stations, some are government-owned but most are private and uncensored. A law was passed several years ago that one of the governement stations, that until then mostly played foreign hits will from that moment on play only Israeli music. At first that law was criticized and everyone said that it would kill the popular station. But after a couple of years it became one of the most popular stations, because people knew for sure that they can always hear a song in their own language. People genuinely love it. So maybe it's not so bad.
