Milinkevich on EuroNews channel

Invited by the French government, our main opposition candidate Alexander Milinkevich visited Paris and met with the French Minister of foreign affairs. During the visit he gave a few interviews, including a TV interview for Euronews. Right now on their website there’s a big banner on the very top of the front page, advertising the upcoming interview with Milinkevich:

P.S. Does anybody know how to convert a chunk of streaming video coming from Euronews.net into a non-streaming video file (.mpeg, .wmv, .qt)? }T{Reme [Q_G] to the rescue? ;)

Heh, sure I’ll save that stream to disk :)

  2. Administrator Says:

That would be awesome! Thanx! :)

  3. }T{Reme [Q_G] Says:

No problem :) Mmm.. one thing tho, just went to euronews.net and noticed that all of the pages got blanked out. Not one contains any information whatsoever. Presumably a server reload, as earlier I was receiving connection failures from the euronews site.

See what I mean here :

Side note, the previous saved feeds hosted by me have been taken down temporarily as our server came under severe attack (DoS followed by pnphpbb2 exploits for phishing scams) We cleaned it out completely by doing an OS reload and switching from PostNuke to XOOPS. Eventually it will run YoroBB and YoroOS which will be exploit proof but I’m still working on those projects ;) I’ll continue hosting these files soon.

It’s crazy. And they say Milinkevich is not popular. ;))

I watched it. It wasn’t bad. He said all the right things and looked fairly self-confident.

  6. }T{Reme [Q_G] Says:

Waiting for this video to become archived… In order to rip it from the live video stream (what you see on tv now) you need a superpass. Altho I can bypass any credit card check, I however cannot bypass an actual bank verification on that credit card.

  7. endrus Says:

Finally I saw it. A nice thing to watch after a 3-hour class about Euro integration ;-).
So here’s my say on this. I like the way he spoke. Confidence supported by intelligence.
I even had a slight impression as if he knew the questions in advance and was reading from a screen behind the interviewer. I jokkke jokkke, I kiddd I kiddd.

  8. }T{Reme [Q_G] Says:

File has been archived by Euronews. I’ve sent the saved stream via email to you Administrator. Also here’s the transcript as far as I could make it out, made for those without RealPlayer. Sorry but I refuse to spell luka’s name with capital letters.

Yes he spoke some interesting words, altho I do wonder what he ment by “But the humilliation I have spoken about” as he only skims over the subject. I think the interview was cut short due to time issues.

Agreements are always made at every formal / official interview to prevent the interview from stalling or looking unprofessional altho I think your assumption of reading from a screen is a bit too much.

Newsreader - Belarus will hold presidential elections in march. The encumbent alexander lukashenka has ruled since 1994 and is running for a third term. The opposition has decided to present an united front, and Alexander Milinkevich is their candidate. But virtually all Belarusian Media is under state control. Milinkevich believes european support is vital *inaudiable* past week has visited Poland and France where he caught up with euronews in Paris.

Interviewer - Mr. Milinkevich welcome to Euronews. What is the aim of your visit to France?

Milinkevich - Our main goal is to try make sure that France doesn’t remain on the outskirts of Belarusian affairs. We know that there are some big problems with democracy, plus France is a very influential country in the European Union and we hope for it’s help. The moral support is already there and we hope to help the independent media. In Belarus the state-owned media is merely an instrument of propaganda and in these circumstances its very important to gain support from independent tv stations and newspapers. We must develop these programs, eradicate oppression and respect people’s rights and move to democratic elections.

Interviewer - How can Europe help the development of democracy in Belarus?

Milinkevich - During the election, Europe will send observers for example. Europe will watch to see if the laws are respected, it can’t be indifferent to what happends in Belarus, because it is after all a neighbour. Sometimes people will say the situation in Belarus is calm, quiet and that it’s not necessary to get involved. In fact, under a regime like that in Belarus there’s never calm. It’s not stable at any time, something could happen and that’s why Belarus must become a democratic country.

Interviewer - Your main rival lukashenka constantly tries to frighten people by saying in *inaudiable* that if he was no longer president, life in the country would stop. Which changes would you make if you won?

Milinkevich - If we came to power we would first of all set about destroying the fear, the humiliation that the Belarusians experience living in an atmosphere of fear. The loss of their dignity is the main causes of all our problems. We’d make sure that fathers returning home will not be affraid their salaries would not be enough to feed their families, that mothers won’t be affraid of their children’s future, that businessman won’t be affraid to get involved in business, that students won’t live in fear of being sent to work in places like Chernobyl. The problem of fear is very serious, but we’ll destroy this fear.

Interviewer - In Europe, life in Belarus seems stable and calm. There’s no war, no ethnical conflicts. People get their salaries and pensions. Why is change necessary?

Milinkevich - Man doesn’t live by bread alone. Yes, in Belarus there’s not total famine. People earn their money with difficulty. They come to the shops, see the terrible prices. But the humilliation I have spoken about must be erradicated. Someone who’s not free, cannot create, cannot live a good life. But if you talk about stability there’s nowhere more stable than a cemetary. But who’s *inaudiable* to that sort of stability? Those in power are forced stability. But we’re for development. We know where we must go, and what must be done so people can live freely and well. We’ll have good relations with Russia and the west. Belarus is the bridge between the east and the west, that’s the advantage of it’s geographical position and we’ll make the most of it.

Interviewer - Let’s imagine that the election has taken place, the results announced. The most likely outcome is that lukashenka will still be president. What will happen then?

Milinkevich - I know that those in power couldn’t win an honest election because it’s not just about counting voices but about preparing the ballot. The opposition who’s had practically no access to the media. That remains a state propaganda tool. We wouldn’t be on the television except thank god you invited us. But these are unequal conditions and they must be equal. If they were, the regime would never win. So that’s why there’s fear and intimidation. Alho he’s the most fearfull.

Interviewer - We hear many different things about you. That you are an agent of western secret services and you are *inaudiable* who’s trying to crush religous foundations in Belarus. Tell me your response to that.

Milinkevich - I’m calm because they’re only lies and when those in power sense uncertainty they constantly invent new things. Calling me the agent of the west is simply ridiculous. I’m a patriotic Belarusian whom lives in this country and thats why I’m standing in the elections. I’m from an orthodox family and I’m orthodox. I’m not a jew but a Belarusian. You know, our people have known for some time what’s true and what’s not.

Interviewer - Thank you for this interview…. (This is the limit of my Russian sorry)
