German Journalism && Angela Merkel
I don’t know much about German journalism, but today I had one opportunity to witness how “fast” and “efficient” their work is. Our main opposition leader Alexander Milinkevich met with Bundeskanzler Angela Merkel today. The meeting ended at about 5PM. It’s already past 9PM, but there is not a single news item, and nor there’s a single photo from the meeting on any of the German news sites. [1]
When Milinkevich was in Brussels and in Strasbourg several days ago, meeting top EU officials, I could immediately find photos and many related news articles online. Not the case with “White Holland” journalists…
P.S. Speaking of “White Holland”, I had a funny little troll about it today. The thing was that I’d filed the item about “Austrian Airlines” under “Deutschland” (simply because I don’t plan to have a separate category for Austria, and because it’s a German-speaking country, no offense intended), and some Russian living in Austria got quite upset about it. Well, I played along.

I don’t know much about them. TVi and Baltic Waves are both all right, I suppose. But we’ll have to see what kind of product they’ll have. I hope it won’t be as bad as the “Belarusian” Deutsche Welle.

On the other hand, some non-German publications already reported it. Amon others, International Herald Tribune wrote about it:

Well, indeed. I just saw a few general pieces about Milinkevich and didn’t notice there was nothing about the meeting with Merkel.
But look, remember the argument about Google? Maybe the search engine filtered Milinkevich out just like Nazi insignalia. :) It’d be interesting to know what kind of coverage of the meeting was on German TV. Maybe German readers of your blog could share. Or you scared them off with the map of White Holland?

I’ve searched all the popular German TV channels and the official government sites of Germany — and nothing. Even the official website of the Bundezkanzler(in) claims that there were no official meetings on February 2:
Heute nimmt Angela Merkel keine öffentlichen Termine als Bundeskanzlerin wahr.
The only item I’ve found is on the the official German Foreign Ministry website:

But this is not even about Merkel. The article is about Minister of foreign affairs of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier meeting with Milinkevich. Actually, this was his second meeting. Milinkevich met the foreign minister after talking with Angela Merkel for more than 1.5 hours.

Maybe, it’s not a big deal for ze Germans… But I really don’t get it why his meetings with top EU leaders got so much more coverage in the news, and here we get total silence.

sounds like a freakin’ catastrophe if you ask me….!
but honestly, media is for the masses, thus what the masses want they get. i remember telling my european friends about the royal massacre in nepal (i was there at the time) and they were like…what? its a kingdom?
media is fun and all, but by no means dependable or worth getting upset over.

Они еще раз выразили ожидание того, что президентские выборы будут соответствовать общепризнанным критериям ОБСЕ свободных и честных выборов, соблюдать которые Беларусь обязалась как и все остальные страны-члены ОБСЕ.

Bundeskanzlerin Merkel und Bundesaußenminister Steinmeier trafen den einheitlichen Kandidaten belarussischer Oppositionsparteien Alexander Milinkewitsch in Berlin
Bundeskanzlerin Dr. Angela Merkel traf am 2. Februar 2006 in Berlin mit dem einheitlichen Kandidaten belarussischer Oppositionsparteien Dr. Alexander Milinkewitsch zusammen. Im Anschluß an die Begegnung im Kanzleramt empfing Bundesaußenminister Dr. Steinmeier den belarussischen Politiker zu einem Gespräch im Auswärtigen Amt. Weitere Gespräche mit dem Außen- und sicherheitspolitischen Berater der Bundeskanzlerin Dr. Christoph Heusgen sowie mit Abgeordneten des Deutschen Bundestages vervollständigten das Programm des eintägigen Aufenthalts von Alexander Milinkewitsch in Berlin.
Bei den Begegnungen bekräftigten die deutschen Gesprächspartner, dass Vorbereitung und Ablauf der belarussischen Präsidentenwahlen am 19. März 2006 in Deutschland aufmerksam verfolgt würden. Sie erneuerten ihre Erwartung, dass die Präsidentenwahlen den allgemein anerkannten Kriterien der OSZE für freie und faire Wahlen, zu deren Einhaltung sich Belarus wie alle anderen OSZE-Mitgliedsstaaten verpflichtet hat, entsprechen.

Bundesaußenminister Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier traf heute (02.02.) mit dem Kandidaten für die weißrussischen Präsidentschaftswahlen am 19. März, Herrn Alexander Milinkewitsch, zu einem Gespräch zusammen.
Bei dem Gespräch informierte sich Bundesminister Steinmeier über die aktuelle Lage in Weißrussland. Besonderes Augenmerk galt dabei der Situation der Medien und der Zivilgesellschaft.

Der Bundesminister unterstrich das fortgesetzte deutsche Interesse an guten und breit gefächerten Beziehungen zu Weißrussland. Deutschland wünscht sich eine Annäherung Weißrusslands an das demokratische Europa und ist gemeinsam mit den EU-Partnern bereit, Weißrussland auf diesem Weg zu unterstützen. Gleichzeitig betonte der Bundesminister die Bedeutung guter Beziehungen Weißrusslands zu Russland, was auch von Alexander Milinkewitsch herausgehoben wurde.
Der Bundesminister betonte das deutsche und europäische Interesse an freien und fairen Wahlen in Weißrussland mit gleichen Chancen für alle teilnehmenden Kandidaten. Dazu riefen auch die Außenminister der EU bereits bei ihrem Treffen am Montag (30.01.) in Brüssel auf. Der Bundesminister begrüßte, dass die weißrussische Regierung zur Wahlbeobachtung eingeladen hat. Deutschland wird sich an der Wahlbeobachtungsmission beteiligen.

So, I am not Russian living in Austria, but if you put Austria under Germany, I would propose that you put Belarus under Russia….or Ukraine under Russia. The languages are not the same in the cases mentioned by me, but the public outside of these countries think of these countries as being part of Russia, so let it be that way (like you think Austria part of Germany)….
…for being a thinking individual that posts interesting articles, this comment was very stupid.
One can be against nationalities and the concept of countries, but eliminating countries is not the right thing to do..put Austria under Europe, but not under Germany….which is a good question itself….why did you form Germany seperated from Europe….
