Belarus: Opposition Politicians Embrace Internet, Despite Digital Divide
With newspapers, radio, and TV under state control, the Belarusian opposition is using new technologies to get their message out — in particular the Internet. All the candidates campaigning in the 19 March presidential election have launched websites, with many users taking part in online discussions. However, these new forms of campaigning have trouble reaching remote locations with no Internet access — the very places where the most committed supporters of incumbent President Alyaksandr Lukashenka are often to be found…
It’s a good article, but one important piece of information is missing, the part about Internet filtering and blocking. On 09/09/2001 a few opposition and independent news sites were blocked inside Belarus. I myself wrote an article about that back in 2001, with the technical details on how the blocking was implemented.
I have absolutely no doubt that on March, 19, and perhaps several days prior and after the election date, quite a few websites will be blocked again. First of all, their entries will most probably be deleted from the Belarus’ root DNS server. Second, our telecom monopolist Beltelecom will probably block the actual incoming traffic from the IP addresses that correspond to those domain names.
I can’t see any feasible solution on how to bypass this kind of blocking and pass on information to internet users inside Belarus, should this happen. If you have any ideas, please write to me or leave a comment.

easiest variant - to access sites through public anonymizers, there are plenty of them online. but beltelecom can block traffic from these..
not so easy variant - to open plenty of mirrors of potentially “would be blocked” sites. but not to disclose their ip’s too early. there is possible to invent any system of notifying users of new ips; by special sites, by icq/e-mail, through “friendly” sites and so on.

I know. But the problem is that 90% of the users probably never even heard about the word proxy.

Yes, that’s a possibility. I was thinking about that too. Of course, we don’t have resources to create many mirrors. But sites like svaboda.org, milinkevich.org, etc. can provide full-text RSS channels, and then those friendly sites can pull all the data from the RSS files and re-publish them on their websites.

LOL should tell you that I have that email address for like 10 years and ‘applsapff’ is a very old inside joke with some local friends :) Am still disconnected so won’t be here for long to write comments. I like your sign of support for the most promising opposition candidate, Ive seen and heard alot of good things on the news, let’s hope things will go through.
Regarding blockades… have some things that could help people blocked from visiting certain sites. Mirritil opens up a few points to start on.
First of all there are DNS blocks. Pretty much your ISPs DNS server is refusing certain site names. Easy and fast remedy is to change your network configuration to use one of the servers on the folowing website as DNS instead.

Second, there are IP blocks. These are harder but not impossible. For this you’ll need to find a working proxy server (simple google for “anon proxy list” should do the trick)
Finally there are keyword blocks. These are the hardest as they block your access based on certain words that are inside the datastream. Only encryption / scrambling can get you past this type of filtering and is beyond the ability of most internet users as you’ll need full access to a slave machine that is able to access what you need.
As for changing your internet / network configuration… it depends on how you are linked. Sorry but I think writing a full-blown walkthrough for common routers and computer configurations is a bit over the top for a comment :)
