Russian intelligentsia && Night Watch

Russian journalist: There’s a widespread (sic!) opinion that in the 21st century Russia will start collecting its “own” former territories. What do you think about that?

Sergei Lukyanenko: First of all, I would not put quotation marks around the word “own”! And I would not call them “former”, but “temporarily lost.” Yes, Russia will start getting them back. And it will get them back. And it will add more to what the communists have lost. [russian]

Sergei Lukyanenko is a cult Russian sci-fi writer, perhaps one of the most famous writers in Russia today. His fantasy-style science fiction book “Night Watch” has been a #1 bestseller in Russia for many months. And it’s been already made into a movie “Nochnoi Dozor.” The film became a huge hit at the box offices all over Russia. Millions of people read his books and saw the movie.

Lukyanenko’s anti-Belarusan, anti-Ukrainian and pro-imperial Russian views are not something of an oddity. There are millions of Russians, including the top elite, who think that Russia must dominate and rule over Belarus, Ukraine and other neighbouring nations.

    Give me a break! Turns out he’s a real weirdo…
    - What can Russia set off against China’s expansion to the Far East and Syberia?
    - Nothing much but the nukes so far.
    - How do you see Russia in 25, 100 years?
    - A strong authoritarian country but free, with market economy […] bla-bla-bla, Russia and China will rock, US will suck :) And so on and so forth… Sicko!

    Endrus, too much fantasy and geopolitics for my taste. ;) Let’s keep it more concrete. You don’t think that Russian imperialism is on the rise? You don’t think that Belarus is the key for Russian imperalists?

    Did you hear what Putin said last week? He said that most important factor in deciding who’s a Russian ally and who’s not, is the treatment of Russian language and Russian culture. And I think it’s one of the first times (or maybe the first time) when he said it openly. It suddenly becomes obvious why “orange” Ukraine is not a friend or strategic ally, but Lukashenka’s Belarus is a strategic friend, no matter what.

    The answer: because Lukashenka consistendly promotes Russian language and Russian culture in Belarus.

    Mirritil: The fact that Dali was a fascist doesn’t make his paintings less beautiful.
