KGB chief threatens with a death sentence
Belarus’ KGB chief, Minister of internal affairs, and Prosecutor General had a joined press conference today. Among other things, KGB chief Sucharenka said (Reuters/Times):
“For those who take the risk of going out into the street and try to destabilise the situation, their actions will be qualified as terrorism. Demonstrators who try and destabilise the situation will be charged with terrorism and face sentences of up to 25 years, or life in prison, or capital punishment.” (!)
This death threat was broadcast on state TV and repeated several times. They want to scare people so that they don’t come out from their homes on the election day. And I think it might have worked. My dad called me tonight and said: “your sister is going out on March, 19. I heard on TV today that this will qualify as terrorism, and she can get a death sentence!” Dad sounded really scared and asked me if I could talk her out…
