[...] But there’s one more complication. The news being broadcast in Belrus is heavily weighted propoganda. The television news has been giving very little coverage all week, except to repeatedly peddle lies about the thousands of intelligent protesters of all ages were nothing more than a handful of drunken students who (”obviously”) needed to have their shenanigans stopped by the (”responsible”) police force. The same nonsense is being promulgated throughout communist Russia and its satellite states. [...]

I know Yuri. It was very obvious. Just after they arrested everybody, for 10 minutes, they didn't let anybody else into the camp, except for KGB agents and Belarusian state TV crew. They were messing around there for 10 minutes.

This falsified report is a big deal in Belarus.

Today, when 10000-15000 people are marching on the streets of Minsk, one of the things they did was to chase away the BT crew, when they came around, with yells: "Shame on you, dirty liars!"

Belarus TV says syringes and porn found in protesters' tents

Belarusian state television has carried an upbeat report about the dispersal of the opposition protest in central Minsk. It said the police acted with restraint, and said empty beer bottles, used syringes and porn magazines were found in the protesters' tents. It also said opposition leaders abandoned their supporters and left the square before the police operation started. The following is the text of report by Belarusian TV on 24 March:

[Presenter] Belarusian law enforcers have put an end to the so-called blue maydan, which was set up several days ago by the opposition presidential contenders who lost the election. The operation took just 15 minutes.

[Correspondent] Various estimates suggest that there were 150 to 300 people at the square when the rally was broken up. They were told to disperse. They were also warned that the rally was unauthorized and unless the participants obey the authorities they would be punished in accordance with acting legislation.

[Unidentified police officer] I am asking you again to move behind the police line to ensure your security.

[Correspondent] Some of the protesters ran away, while others were taken into custody. The Minsk city police directorate says that all the women have already been released. The police were unarmed and acted with restraint, without using special equipment. This was noted by the news agencies Interfax and RBK as well as foreign television channels. The search of the tents abandoned by the opposition activists produced numerous empty bottles from alcoholic drinks, used disposable syringes and pornographic magazines. Provocateurs who tried to put up resistance to law enforcers were also detained. Among them were Ukrainian and Lithuanian nationals. The Ukrainians are members of the extremist youth organization Pora. It should be noted that the opposition presidential challengers abandoned the rally participants and left the square well before the police operation started.
