Stanislaw Lem is Dead

My most favorite sci-fi author Stanislaw Lem, died today in Kraków, Poland, at the age of 84. His books have been translated into 41 languages and sold over 27 million copies. At one point he was the most widely read science fiction author in the world.

I wrote about his books in this blog several months ago. I don’t have anything to add to that. He’s great.

My two most favorite books from him are Cyberiad and Memoirs Found in a Bathtub.

By the way, Lem was born in Lviv, Ukraine.

    Da, ushel Stasik.

U moej odnoklassnicy Iry Kuzmickoj v Hrodna bylo mnogotomnoe (16 tomov?) izdanie Lema po-pol’ski. My vse ej zavidovali. Kak-to Lem, vsegda byl rodnym. Kak i Chesek Niemen, naprimer.

A ia vot kak raz v etot Christmas kupil ego dvuhrtomnik po-russki. Mne kogda-to strashno ponravilas’ ego “Igla”. Ia ego chital v “Himii i zhizni”. Byl takoj escapistskij zhurnalec, pechatavshij Lema i Pelevina (”Zatvornik i Shestipalyj” v nem vpervye byli opublikovany). Horoshie illustratory tam tozhe rabotali. Togda eto bylo po molodosti neponiatno. A sejchas nachinaesh’ ponimat’ kak hrenovo bylo intelligencii v te gody. Beznadega zh byla polnaia.

Perechital “Iglu” na Christmas. Teper’ ona “Maska” nazyvaetsia. Vse tak zhe nravitsia.
Hotel “Bol’nitsu Preobrazhenija” pochitat’ - no ispugalsia. Itak Lukashenko gruzit. Esche i te vremena vspominat’…
