Vaclav Havel denied entry to Belarus’ embassy

A former president of Czech Republic Vaclav Havel (who gets invited to the most exclusive political and social events all over the planet, by top politicians and royalty alike) was denied entry by the Belarusan embassy in Prague today when he attempted to personally hand over a petition condemning undemocratic and non-free elections in Belarus. He was accompanied by two senators and several members of parliament, who were also denied entry.

The Czech ex-president rang the bell at the embassy gates, and after being asked who he was, he said he’s Vaclav Havel and he wants to deliver a petition. A woman, probably a secretary of the embassy, answered to that: “Which firm do you represent?” and hang up after a moment.

On a second attempt, he again introduced himself and said that he wants to deliver a letter. “Just throw it in the mailbox“, the woman answered and hang up again.

Vaclav Havel shrugged his shoulders, smiled to the journalists saying that this reminds him of the year 1979 in Czechoslovakia.

At the time, “my British colleagues Tom Stoppard and Harold Pinter protested against my imprisonment by the communist regime in Prague. They, too, brought their protest to the [Czechoslovak] embassy. They, too, had to cast it in a mailbox,” Havel said.

Quite typical, to block access to anyone entering whom could have even a remote political intent…

Good news: the German parliament has condemned the undemocratic and unfair election in Belarus and has demanded that the German government does its level best to contribute to the liberation of the imprisoned opposition people (http://www.bundestag.de/bic/hib/2006/2006_099/02.html).

Along with everything which seems to be developing inside this particular subject material, all your viewpoints are generally rather stimulating. On the other hand, I beg your pardon, but I can not give credence to your whole suggestion, all be it exciting none the less. It looks to us that your remarks are actually not totally justified and in simple fact you are your self not really totally confident of the point. In any event I did appreciate examining it.
