Lukashenko: Dead or Alive

As an April’s Fool Day joke I was thinking of writing a one line entry:

“Lukashenka is dead”

But then I thought that this would be too cruel. It’d be too cruel to the wives of the disappeared politicians. It’d be too cruel to the opposition activists who spent many months or years in jails. It’d be too cruel to hundreds of young people that were arrested after the “elections” in the last 2-3 weeks.

I’m pretty sure Lukashenka is still alive. Although, indeed, he hasn’t appeared in public for a very long time which is extremely unusual and highly suspicious. But whether Lukashenka is dead or alive it doesn’t really matter now because his authoritarian punitive and vindictive “state machine” is running as usual.

According to a report on the CNN website today, Lukashenka’s inauguration has been rescheduled for this Saturday, 8 April 2006. :(

I read the same thing in today’s newspaper… You know… I thought up a theory behind his dissapearance… What if he planned a nice vacation to celebrate his “victory”? It’s not too far fetched either. I mean… he already knew he was going to “win” far far in advance. Second, he can pretty much do whatever he wants (as he has shown in the past and continues to do so). Dissapearing without telling anyone and posponing the inauguration for no reason is nothing for him.
