Destroying History

Let’s imagine that the most prestigious state award in USA would’ve been George Washington’s medal or something like that, and Americans would’ve elected a president that would award this medal to people such as pro-Saddam Arabic pop-singers or anti-American Hamas politicians who want to take over USA.

How absurd does that sound?

In Belarus, this became a reality. The most valuable decoration in Belarus is Francis Skaryna medal, which is supposed to be given “for the highest achievements in national revival and state construction.” And Alexander Lukashenka has been given it to people like mediocre Russian pop-singers who supported him during this “election” and Russian politicians who openly want to annex Belarus.

Lukashenko also said on March 2 that Francis Skaryna (who is the #1 historical person in Belarus known even to 3-5 year old kids) has lived in Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

FYI, for those who haven’t studied East Slavic history, Francis Skaryna died about 150 years before Saint-Petersburg was even founded (1703). At the location of future Leningrad there were just stinky swamps at the time when Skaryna was studying and working in Padua (Italy), Prague, Krakow, Poznan, Wilno, publishing first-ever East Slavonic (Old Belarusian) Bible and spreading printed word in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Now, in the 21st century, Lukashenka renames the main avenue, removing Skaryna’s name, and awards Skaryna’s medal to Russian scum.

…And don’t forget about Vasili Bykov’s poetry so much cherished by Alexander Lukashenka :)

Grrr he’s destroying more and more of Belarusian culture purely out of his own ignorance. All of his distruction will be rebuilt one day.

Russians to Belarussians are not like Arabs to Americans. It’s like East Coasters to Midwesterners.
Why do you call Russians a “scum”? Are you a racist?

He ment Russian scum as in the people lukashenka gave the “former” prestigious Skaryna medal to. Being: “mediocre Russian pop-singers who supported him during this “election” and Russian politicians who openly want to annex Belarus”. In the eyes of most people these would be considered scum, its not a comment related to racism altho the nationality of these people is Russian. My perception on this entry in any case…

  6. Administrator Says:

Dmitriy: By “scum” I meant people who didn’t deserve the medal and were awarded it because they didn’t those propaganda concerts all over Belarus (Babkina of “Russkaya pesnia”, Nikolay Baskov, Nikolay Gnatiuk, Vasil Rainchik, etc.)

If they had any minimal respect for Belarusian people, they wouldn’t accept Skaryna’s medal from Lukashenka.

Dmitriy: Russians to Belarusians are not like Arabs to Americans. It’s like East Coasters to Midwesterners.

Maybe, you should read some history books. Did East Coasters ever kill 50% of Midwesterner “brothers”?

[…] Apparently, I was not the only one upset and saddened about the fact that Lukashenka disgraces and dishonors Skaryna’s medal, the highest award in Belarus, by giving it to second-rate Russian pop-singers and anti-Belarusan Russian politicians. Today there were two small rallies in Vilnia (Vilnius) and in Prague, with the message “Skaryna’s medal should be given to heroes of Belarus” (Ордэны Скарыны — героям Беларусі). […]

Nikolay Gnatiuk is Ukrainian, Vasil Rainchik is Belarus. Why did not your call them “Ukrainian / Belarussian scum”? You called them “Russian scum”.

    >Maybe, you should read some history books. Did East Coasters ever kill 50% of Midwesterner “brothers”?
Maybe you shoud use your logical abilities. 50% - is totally unrealistic number. Such massacre was not possible until 20th century.

In 19th century Yankees killed a lot of Southerners. Are they not Americans?

  10. Administrator Says:

Most of the people who received Skaryna’s medal from Lukashenka’s hands are people with Soviet/Imperial Russian mentality. Does it really matter that some of them are ethnically Belarusan or Ukrainian?

  11. Dmitriy Says:

It is a great mistake to mix Soviet with Russian. Soviet policy towards Russian people was always very hostile. Soviet dictatorship was clearly anti-russian. Most victims of Soviet regime were Russian people.

  12. Administrator Says:

Dmitriy: I don’t mix them. But in case of Lukashenka’s regime pro-Soviet and pro-Russian elements are inseparably bonded together. It can be viewed as one ideology (although it’s so primitive I’m not even sure if ideology is good enough word to describe it).
