Retouching Lukashenko

The first photo is a screenshot of Lukashenka’s inauguration from EuroNews. The second photo is an “improved” version published in the main Lukashenka’s newspaper “Sovietskaya Belorussiya”.

The rumours of Lukashenka’s health problems are spreading further and further. The initial sign was an unusually long delay of his inauguration, by at least two weeks and his disappearance from public for many days during that time. Then it was Lukashenka’s cancellation of all events related to 10 years annivessary of the so called “union” state of Russia and Belarus which fueled more speculations.

Yesterday there was yet another sign of his problems. He didn’t show up at a huge international Chernobyl conference in Minsk, where he was expected to deliver a speech, and instead had a closed meeting with several officials. What is even more interesting is what he said there, the key phrase being:

“From now on the president won’t be running ahead of the government or a state official. Those who must be in the first row, going forward toward the enemy lines, must do so. Those who don’t want to do that must leave”.

It’s a very unusual statement from Lukashenka. It’s as if he acknowledges his weak health or pretends to give more authority to the government. There are already lots of speculations in Belarusian blogosphere about this.

    lol
he just looks more and more like adolf hitler when the russians we’re pounding berlin (der untergang, great movie)

  2. endrus Says:

Actually, it is expedient to ask what would Belarus’ officialdom and also the opposition do if he dies. I really doubt there’s any strategy. The tendency, I suppose, is to rebuff this assertion as too speculative and highly improbable. But just think - what will they do if it happens?

I do agree… he has the same mustace.. and the same look on his eyes.

Yes, but what about the public? Do they know? If kgb tv is showing the same thing as “Soviet Belarus” (awful name in my opinion, those words shouldnt be combined in one sentence ever) then nobody knows.

Endus “But just think - what will they do if it happens?”:
If he dies? Hmm… Im guessing he will never really die… I think that some of his kgb friends will find a lookalike and use him as a puppet while theyre in control. Ive seen some really awful things happen in the past few years which convinces me that they will do something as ridiculous as this. Theyve done everything to stay in power so far, including killing people.

Maybe they will continue to try to broker an agreement with Russia? Any thoughts on how legit those rumours are? I cannot see it happening as long as Lukashenka is in power (power struggle between Putin and Lukashenka is probably a major factor in stalling talks). But if Lukashenka were to die… it seems as if it would open the door to a merger (sounds like a business deal). How old is Lukashenka, anyway?

  5. Ivan Lenin Says:

    TaliaXianne:

Merger with Russia is a very unpopular idea in Belarus. Lukashenka’s propaganda, while exploiting the pro-Russian sentiment in the beginning, became somewhat anti-Russia later, because Lukashenka never intended to put out: to him, giving up the independence was just a bait for his game with the Kremlin.

Also, a new generation has grown up that can’t imagine Belarus as anything but an independent country. The number of people who support a merger is below 10%. Surprisingly, the Belarusian people don’t feel like being the object of a business deal.

TaliaXianne “How old is Lukashenka, anyway?”:
He was born in 1954 according to wikipedia so that makes him 52… I guessed him in the 50’s so I wasnt that far off ;)

Ivan Lenin: “Surprisingly, the Belarusian people don’t feel like being the object of a business deal.”:
How would you feel if your house, the place you work at, the friends and family you visit, your life… would be just some letters in a contract? How is that surprising? I do wonder where you found those numbers Ivan. Politics is a very no-no discussion, even with close friends.

P.S. It seems that they (Sovietskaya Belorussiya and the official presidential site president.gov.by) went so far as to use an old image from 2001 (!) inauguration, but now it seems the images were removed from Lukashenka’s webserver.

Here are the photos and discussion on whether the images are fresh and photoshoped or taken from five years ago:

Mmm yeah your right. Lol I thought it was rather odd that they added two microphones and a flag in the background.

Oh guess what? It’s an exact match. I too can play the photoshop game so made an animated gif showing the transition from photo to newspaper.

I guess he’s not allowed to look sick or old. Propaganda *shrug* … wonder if they’ll use pictures from when he was in his 30’s next time.
