Intercepted Police Radio Talks
Some hacker has intercepted police talks from the “Chernobyl March” opposition rally in Minsk and put them on the Web (here). Police speaks in Russian, the quality is dreadful, and they use their own jargon and code numbers, so I didn’t get a whole lot from the audio (mp3, 11 minutes). Here are some of the excerpts which I found interesting:
We are going to the base. People are leaving toward Bangalore.
Shit, what are you doing? Don’t scare them like that, fucker, they’ll move back and make a rally again.
06, what? Mother fucker, you lost Ivashkevich1? I specifcally asked you! People, all those who see him, find Ivashkevich as soon as possible!
017, where’s the Beard2?
I don’t know.
Who was following him?
017 74.
Roger. Where’s the Beard?
He’s on the other side, the left exit, toward the park.
Got it. And the other subject?
I don’t see the other one3. …
…
So what about the Beard?
There was no orders regarding him. But the other subject must be next to him.
He’s going toward the road. He is about to leave, maybe. Do I do the thing?
What thing? I didn’t get your question…013, where’s the subject with the letter I4?
I don’t see him. I’m following the other one.
Got it.The Beard headed toward Karastajanava street.
And follow Viachorka!5
Ok. We are overtaking Viachorka.
Roger. The Beard stopped a taxicab on Karastajanava street and is getting in. The license plate is 2058 MAT.
1 Viktar Ivashkevich is a vice-chariman of the Belarusian National Front. He is now arrested.
2 Apparently, police nicknamed the new leader of Belarusan opposition Alexander Milinkevich “the Beard.” He is now arrested.
3 This must be either the chief of the Belarusian National Front Vincuk Viachorka (also now in jail) or his vice-chairman Viktar Ivashkevich.
4 Again, that must be Ivashkevich.

Hmm… I dont think its really “hacking” that radio transmission… just need a radio scanner that is able to receive the frequency bands that are normally off-limits for civilians.
Its disturbing how severely corrupt and systematic their approach is… from your excerpts… they dont seem to care whatsoever about the demonstration. They just wanted to get these people, regardless of the cost.
Whats more disturbing… when one tries to understand why these people would even consider working for the police… I wouldnt be able to sleep at night, look at my wife… or hold my children… knowing I done all this shit, knowing im helping my own country to distruction.

That’s basically what I had in mind.
But the whole thing, from tapping into this special radio frequency to generating an mp3, does take a bit of hacking, don’t you agree? :)

Hehe mebe :) I used to have a police scanner a bunch of years back… was amusing to hear ppl talking in codes and things. Getting it into an mp3 form… if the scanner has a socket for a headset… It would be possible to connect it directly to your computer via the blue line-in port. Otherwise a microphone would do :) Record the sound using basic sound recorder from windows or your favorite sound editor (sound forge is awesome), compress it using your fav encoder (even nero has one, altho I prefer LAME). Done :)
I guess you could call this a guide on how to do it ;)
Does anyone know / searched for what the codes mean? I tried but came up blank. Can only guess that the numbers starting with 0 are agent numbers.
If anyone wishes to analyze these recordings further, I can give it a shot on clearing up the sound quality.

Towards the end there are the words “To everyone except 074 - Thanks for your service from Minsk”.
1. What’s the deal with 074? I must have missed it in all the hiss.
2. Do they really think that they are doing someone a favor? Or are they just loyal to the government, because the gov. treats them well?
In Israel there’s a lot of controversy about the role of police and army in crushing the right-wing “orange” opposition, which is usually non-violent. The armed forces here are not particularly privileged - their salaries are quite average. Most of the policemen and soldiers are “just doing their job”.

074 apparently lost Ivashkevich, so there are no thanks to him.

aharoni: You are asking good questions. I don’t know for sure. Maybe, they view it as a fun game. And I also heard that Lukashenka gives them very good salaries (I heard the figures around 1000 dollars per month, which is huge by Belarusan standards)…

Our police are a bunch of big stupid Belarussian villagers nursed and hallooed by Lukashenko.
May 7th, 2006 at 8:00 pm
Wow.. 1000 a month? That IS huge… still… I would never do something like this… even for a million dollars… But I guess that’s just me :(

I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well. But it was interesting! Look for some my links:
